Dolphin and whale watching under sail
Spring Cruise 2001 on Anna M

Bound for La Coruña

On May 2nd we left Gijon in the morning, something of an act of faith, as there was no wind now, yet still a lumpy South Biscay slop; lousy conditions in a sailing-boat. However we were rewarded with an easterly breeze, before we even reached Cabo Peñas, and we enjoyed a sparkling sail along the Cantabrian coast. Then in the evening another front came through. The wind backed NW and freshened to force 6/7 with rain. Rather than beat on into the night, we ducked behind the massive break-water of San Ciprián. The aluminium smelter there is not exactly pretty, but we were very glad of the snug anchorage in the NW corner of the harbour.

La Coruña old and new
The wind died overnight; same story again of setting out under power, yet blessed with a fair wind after an hour or so. Fred Tottenham was on the 'phone (the coverage is very good round the Spanish coast), and we arranged to meet him on the landing at the foot of the tower on La Coruña's break-water. Late that evening, we picked up a mooring nearby and rowed ashore to do so. Now we had a fine strong crew for the Azores trip.
