On May 2nd we left Gijon in the morning, something of an act of
faith, as there was no wind now, yet still a lumpy South Biscay
slop; lousy conditions in a sailing-boat. However we were rewarded
with an easterly breeze, before we even reached Cabo Peñas,
and we enjoyed a sparkling sail along the Cantabrian coast. Then
in the evening another front came through. The wind backed NW and
freshened to force 6/7 with rain. Rather than beat on into the night,
we ducked behind the massive break-water of San Ciprián.
The aluminium smelter there is not exactly pretty, but we were very
glad of the snug anchorage in the NW corner of the harbour.
