We took a taxi ride round the beautiful island, but had to press
on all too quickly, as we wanted to spend as much time as possible
at Horta, and get back to Ireland before the end of the month. The
weather was warm but often rainy, with fitful winds; the 'Azores
high' had taken up residence in Ireland for the time being! 'Mr
Perkins' had to do some serious work on the way from Santa Maria
to Pico and Faial, though a fair breeze did take us half the way.
We had a bit of serious work to do too, once we got there; not to
say there wasn't time to enjoy Horta's unique atmosphere too.

In the late Spring it's full of migrating yachties
on their way back to Europe from the Carribean; on a wet and windy
day, or indeed pretty much any kind of day, they pack into Peter's
Cafe Sport like a flock of starlings; there's nowhere else quite
like it for consorting with this motley tribe! The locals really
seem to appreciate them too; you're well looked after, but there's
none of the feeling that they just want to rip you off; it's just
a fine old Portuguese town that's well used to sea-farers. Before
the yachties came it was the whalers, but it seems to be all the
same to them!
